Sustainable design complied with strict criteria in order to obtain the seal
São Paulo, August 10, 2017 – The latest building to be constructed at the JBS headquarters complex, in São Paulo, has achieved the Green Building green level in the “new construction” category, complying with the requirements issued by the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) system, the most widely recognized seal for sustainable construction in Brazil which has also been adopted by over 160 countries worldwide.
Created by the US Green Building Council, a US nonprofit organization, the certificate states the building complies with civil construction sustainability principles – before, during and after construction.
The complex was required to meet the following criteria in order to receive the certificate: occupation of space; water usage efficiency; power and atmosphere usage efficiency; the resources and materials used; internal environmental quality; design or operational innovation; regional priority credits that comply with the NGO’s specifications.

Designed by architect Edo Rocha, the building optimizes energy usage, improves quality of life and ensures lower operating and maintenance costs. Altogether, JBS invested 2% more than was needed to build this sustainable building.
The green building has approximately 12,000 m² of floor space, with around 3000 m² per floor and sufficient room for up to 600 employees. As part of the unique architectural design, facilities were created to offer a wide view of the entire space. This means that each floor has just four supporting pillars, creating a clean, modern look.
The concept behind this space also meant paying special attention to the materials used for architectural interiors. Decorative panels, dividers and furniture are all made using wood from renewable forests and all of suppliers contracted hold FSC certification, ensuring that they comply with environmental regulations.
Furthermore, in order to improve employee quality of life and health, the design includes a high standard air filtering system. This means that around 30% more outside air circulates in working areas, helping to eliminate viruses and other pathogens. To provide thermal comfort throughout the building, the design includes an air-conditioning system installed in the floors, which helps to balance temperatures and control the environment. The entire air-conditioning system uses an alternative energy source based on gas driven motors.
Finally, the new building was especially designed to reduce water consumption. By installing high-efficiency equipment, drinking water consumption has fallen by 34.5%. The building also includes a rainwater collection system, storing 50% of the water that falls on the roof for site irrigation and washing, reducing surface flows across the development.
